About the Tote Bag:
This tote bag was made with the intention to covey a message about the emotional baggage that many people in society carry around with them. Sexual assault is a prevalent problem with 1 out of every 6 women in the U.S getting sexually assaulted and 1 out of every 33 men also experiencing some form of assault. The tote bag I’m presenting attempts to bring a sliver of light on the subject by featuring a variety of things that survivors of sexual assault have faced. The main face of the bag conveys the silence that a victim experiences by society and oftentimes the abuser themselves. The second side of the bag features verbal abuse that many victims are presented with when coming forth with their experiences. Finally, the chains (or the handles) of the bag attempt to convey the chains that weigh every victims down, this could range from the abuser, the fear of coming forward, or the overall stigma surrounding sexual assault. As a victim of sexual assault, I attempted to create a bag that would help spread awareness and create conversations around topics related to sexual assault that not only can bring awareness to society but also bring peace to those affected.
