If you are looking for a quick answer to: “what is this?” we are an artist run business that sells artist made products and we have hopes to provide helpful, practical services to artists. If you want to know exactly what we are doing in more detail, you can read further. There are many things we hope to do, but we are just in phase one, so buckle up, and read on.

but, also is dedicated to the sustaining of art practices, in a multitude of forms, through a series of short-term projects. Through open calls, exhibitions, storefront installations, online promotion, documentation, discussion, and direct sales, the mission of but, also is to support all the aspects of an artistic practice that surround the making of art.

The flagship and inaugural project at but, also will give artists the opportunity to create profit from an art practice by way of artist-designed merch: posters, tote bags, t-shirts, cups, and other such multiples. Through the concept of merch, artists will have the space to try something new, launch a pre-existing idea, and be part of a series of editionable projects.

Following the inaugural project we will expand our offerings / our support of artists beyond direct sales: through professional services such as artwork documentation, marketing and promotion, editing, and website assistance, that benefit and support the sustainability of an artist’s career outside of the studio. DC has robust programmatic support for teaching artists WHAT to do, but a gap in support for HOW and WHERE to do it. We will fill that gap.

The primary function of but, also is not to guide artists’ work, but rather to support all aspects surrounding the artwork, encourage creative business-making, and help artists find creative solutions for a sustainable practice. Supporting artists through professional assistance and platforms for selling products, supporting the local and regional art market and being a beacon of support, encourages artists to be their own independent businesses.
