Washington, D.C.: but, also is pleased to present Score! A performance art exhibition and sale in partnership with STABLE Arts. Score! will be on view from May 12 - May 20, 2023 at STABLE Arts Gallery at 336 Randolph Pl NE, Washington, DC 20002. A reception and performances on May 12, 2023 from 6-8pm will open the exhibition that will be in view for one week.

- a line (such as a scratch or incision) made with or as if with a sharp instrument (Mirriam-Webster)
- a number that expresses accomplishment (as in a game or test) or excellence (as in quality) either absolutely in points gained or by comparison to a standard. (Mirriam-Webster)
- “A performance art score refers to notations or instructions regarding an artwork or an artistic composition that can be used by an artist to recreate the artwork at a later time. Scores are as varied as the artists who make them and can feature, for example, magazine and newspaper clippings, drawings, or color-coded stage directions.” (MoMA.org)
Performance art has a long engagement with the “score” as a document, to preserve or archive live works, to translate them between artists or enactors, and collaborate across forms. There is an even longer history when considering a score as a text that documents movement, sound, and direction, and yet more applications of the word score in the English language from notches, to 20 of anything, to a GOAL! We win! We digress… In Score! artists create and perform work that engages with the applications and possibilities of a score. Score! is exploration of the ways in which artists use a score in live work and of how that work can be held and shared in a gallery setting.
In true but, also form our approach to this exhibition of performance is to play with both the form and the sustainability of performance and how live work can be archived, captured, and financially fed. The exhibition will open with a night of seven performances, and will be followed by a week-long run of the performances’ residue as an installation. In the gallery there will also be displayed the scores that accompany each performance work. All items and scores will be for sale online and in person as sculpture and prints.
Score! sets out to share performance art with the public in an intentional and rarely found performance-art-specific space. The exhibition invites you to engage with and encounter live work from multiple angles, and gives the public the opportunity to learn about and directly support the artists’ practices through sales.
