why these were made and why the artist would like to part with them...

Subway & Burger King: “I have a whole series of franchise paintings, the small ones on paper sold really well but no one has wanted these larger ones. They're taking up so much space in my basement. I really overestimated people's nostalgia for fast food I guess.”

Philodendron: “Last piece of a series exploring plants as patterns.”

“I just truly need the space back to continue making work. These works are well painted and I was definitely obsessed with them for awhile (artists— we always think our latest is our greatest!) but my practice has moved on and I don't need to continue exhibiting these. I would love for them to find a home with someone who has strong memories of the franchises.”

Artist Statement:
For Franchise Works “Subway” and “Burger King”: Selected from Forbes 2016 List of the top grossing franchises, the oil paintings in this series combine pattern and corporate architecture to highlight the similarities in these familiar structures. Each structure depicted was the most common free standing style of each of these chains in 2017. This series centers the American obsession with the hyperreal and our acceptance of the sign of something over the real thing— in franchise architecture pediments, cupolas and clapboard sides are attached to stucco boxes to evoke our pastoral past, half of which was imagined anyway. For me, franchise architecture symbolizes the American tendency to deceive ourselves with imitations in the hopes of feeling better, accepting fro-yo when we actually want ice cream.
