“but, also” invites artists to submit work for consideration for our upcoming exhibition, SSSSSS // Small Scale Site Specific Sculpture Show. Reconsidering the functions and roles of sculpture in the domestic spaces, we want artists of all 3D mediums to submit small scale sculptural works that are designed specifically for interior spaces. From bedrooms and kitchens, to bathtubs and cupboards, to desks and bookshelves these contemporary artworks will engage, with tongue-in-cheek, in the role that art can play in our lives and in our homes. The exhibition will be curated with these interior spaces in mind, recreating elements of the spaces in which each work is destined to live. A sink, perhaps, will protrude from the wall as home to a work of art, a bookshelf will reside in the gallery as a pedestal, a window sill as a shelf.

In keeping with but, also’s mission to create generative opportunities for artists to make work that can financially supplement their primary art practice, this exhibition functions both as an installation of artworks and as a shop, where all works are marketed and for sale. This exhibition will engage DC residents both within and outside of the arts, by opening them to the many ways in which artists can be supported and artwork can be collected. We see sculpture represented in museums and galleries far out of reach in scale or price, but this doesn’t mean we can’t collect sculpture. By keeping accessibility at the forefront “SSSSS” will create a space where artists can experiment and sell their work, and where members of the DC community can come together around art and artists, with a sense of humor.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
The final works in the show will come together in an installation that recreates elements of a home. Each artist will be assigned a location within a home. Selection for the exhibition will come in 2 rounds.

Round 1: Artists are asked to submit examples of their work, an artist statement and their installation location preferences.

Round 2: Selected artists will be asked to submit sketches and statements based on assigned locations.

This seems like an unusual process for selecting work in a small group show. Why are we doing it this way?
Great question. Glad you asked.
1. We don’t want to end up with 50 sketches for work that lives under the kitchen sink. This is a show about the home not a show about kitchen sinks.
2. It takes time and energy to conceptualize, design and create an installation (even though these will be small.) We first want to know that you are interested in participating and can demonstrate through your practice that creating said installation is within your wheelhouse. Then we will narrow down the submissions to a manageable exhibition before asking you to “do the work.” We are trying to respect your time and energy.





 
What do we mean when we say “elements of a home?”
We basically just mean any permanent fixture to a home where a sculptural piece could live. In the application, you will be asked to indicate preferred locations. Successful installations will take these locations into consideration. We aren’t looking for a sculpture placed under a sink, for example, we’re looking for an installation that only works under the sink and takes the architecture of that space into consideration. You are not being asked to create any of these things, just sculptures that will live in them. For example, you would not make a couch but might be asked to make an installation that lives under the couch.

  3. Kitchen Sink (in or under)
  4. Within a chandelier
  5. On a bookshelf
  6. On that piece of workout equipment that you swear you would use but now just holds sort of clean clothes.
  7. Window
  8. Doorway
  9. Kitchen cabinet
  10. Kitchen or dining room table
  11. shower/ bathtub
  12. Couch
  13. Inside a pot that hangs in the kitchen
  14. Refrigerator
  15. Bathroom sink (in or under)
  16. Between the washer and the dryer
  17. On the mantle piece
  18. In an unusable fireplace
  19. A radiator
  20. Behind the t.v.
  21. Under the bed
  22. In the pantry
  23. Underwear drawer
  24. mail box
  25. Pantry
  26. Other… Feel free to suggest something




WHAT YOU'LL GET
1.    60% if your work sells. Our goal is to sell out your work and get everyone paid. We will do this through a hybrid model of online and social media promotion and open storefront hours.
2.     Free promotion. Not only will we push the items for sale on our website and social media but we’ll highlight you and your art practice.
3.     A line on your resume that comes with a pretty funny title.
4.     High quality tiff and jpeg documentation of the final piece.



IF YOU ARE SELECTED TO MOVE ON TO THE 2ND ROUND YOU WILL BE ASKED TO PROVIDE
  1. A photo of yourself
  2. Your bio
  3. A sketch of your proposed installation based on your assigned location
  4. A statement with a description of the proposed work and an explanation of how it relates to the space conceptually and/or physically.
